Writing about beauty is always fun, but the best is when you stumble upon stories of change and transformation even through something most people see as an area fueled by vanity. Photography by Tiana Markova at “Duckrabbit — we produce photofilms”, showing images of poor young women on the streets of Rio, Brazil, finding a way out of poverty, abuse, and hopelessness through the Salão Escola de Beleza Afro (School of Afro Salon Beauty). The goal of this school: “To provide these women with the opportunity to find their self-worth again and use beauty as means of independence instead of bondage to poverty and abuse”. A great initiative and the strong photography by Markova below, speaks of it!

So I have recently caught this Coca-Cola ad “If You Love It Light” mainly shown in the UK, and I am surprised I have not caught this earlier. But obviously, the ad is about staying away from calories by drinking the light Coca-Cola. However, you also have super skinny “fashionable” marionettes with what I call “lolipop” heads dancing around in Christian Louboutins heels. These lolipop head characters are obviously in a fashion house office of some kind, getting happy on light Coca-Cola. It is actually quite funny but at the same time shows a little bit of a disturbing caricature of the industry’s women… What do you think? Urban Outfitters is one of those very interesting stores where you can find great items hidden amongst so many other…. well, not so unique items. It’s just that with other stores like Forever 21 where younger people can afford somewhat fashionable clothing at a very low price, spending $68 on a regular top for many of them is just not happening! Especially in these economic times!
However, I have to admit that I can’t resist Urban, because sometimes they have unique and querky pieces hidden around the filled store, waiting for you to find them. Since I do not mind going around and looking for a piece I want absolutely have to buy, going to this store can actually be great fun. Well for my style not my wallet!
On a recent trip there, I found some simple but interesting items (below). On the hanger, they may look not so special, but once you put them on, they take on a life of themselves. The secret is to always, ALWAYS, TRY IT ON!! Plus I noticed in the men’s section, some Nikes with black leather on soft grey material. Pretty nice for girls too!
